Calamity Sultoni
Sultoni, 27 years old man from Tegal, Jawa Tengah, Indonesia suffered from polio almost 26 year since the age of 13 months till now.
Unlike many teenagers in general who can interact with the outside world, hanging out with friends, and feel the world of education, etc., Sultoni can only lie in bed (wooden board without a pillow or mattress pads) accompanied by a small radio at his side.
When Sultoni was 13 months, Rasito, his father took him to a hospital. Sultoni was still unable to walk until the lapse of time long enough.
Rasito tried to cure his son by taking him back to the same hospital that is RS. Susilo, Slawi-Tegal. According to the pediatrician who examined his circumstances, Sultoni was experiencing symptoms of polio.
No Health Access for Poor People Like Sultoni
The certificate that informed they were poor family earned by Rasito was enough to help him to get free medical help, even though it was not completely free because the drugs are required by Sultoni not available in the hospital and they forced Rasito to buy them outside the hospital.
Sultoni was initially placed in the bedroom in the house. But because the family can not stand the smell of feces, the family put Sultoni in the kitchen, where usually his mom cook.
Now kitchen becomes his bedroom as well. Any reasonable efforts have been made, but Sultoni still can not walk until today.
Sultoni’s Family Portrait
Sultoni’s father, Rasito was a primary school graduated who could only work as a coolie in the market with low income of about 12,000 per day. Rasito finally could only surrender and surrender completely to God for his life and suffering children.
In 1989, Rasito was trying to change his fate by switching job as a pedicab driver. Even for the pedicab alone he should buy by credit.
Rasito has four children including Sultoni, Sandi, Bowo & Luki. After having 4 children, his wife died. Sandi, his second child, has no regular job to do until now and he work as one of the construction laborers.
Sometimes he also works as a driver’s assistant in one transportation company. Bowo, the third son of Rasito, entrusted to the Orphanage since elementary school until now because of their lack of cost for raising him.
Bowo’s fate is more fortunate than his brothers. He now lectures in the Trans Jaya financed by the company Botol Sosro as much as 50%, while the remaining 50% financed by the parents who have to seek debt everywhere for his child’s school fare.
Luki, the last child entrusted to his sister namely aunt Jamilah since the age of 8 months until now. Currently Luki is sitting in the 6th grade of elementary school.
So was the portrait of family life in a state of poverty. They can not access education services, health, and isolated from the outside world.
